Released to promote the 2009 Soulsavers album Broken, but not actually on it, Sunrise is a trip-hoppy outing for Soulsavers with an uplifting vocal from Will Oldham evoking a sunrise in a desert landscape with a "woman too good to believe", and being infused with the power of nature and the optimism of daybreak. A bit too much harmonica for my liking though, and it kind of goes nowhere else after the first minutes.
The B-side actually does appear on the Broken album, and is apparently more fitting with the darker mood of that record (not that I have yet heard it). Will Oldham recorded this first as a spare acoustic-guitar Palace Brothers number on the eponymous 1994 album, and it got the full Country 'n' Western treatment on 2004's ...Sings Greatest Palace Music project.
It has been stripped back here, and to great effect. Simply piano, cello, Mark Lanegan's vocal, and uncredited female backing vocals. Sublime.
