A Bonny Billy - Brother Warrior
B Rainywood - Cornflower Blue
I had high hopes for this single, after the cover versions on Little Boy Blue. Here we have two cover verions of songs by Kate Wolf. I had no idea who she was, and if you don't either, here's a link to her official site. On the strength of this single I'm not going to be worrying my bank manager by splurging on her records any time soon.
The Bonny Billy track is the better of the two, although you could easily make your own version. Firstly get the lyrics and tabs from the great French site palace.fr then you strum an acoustic and do your best Will Oldham impression. Finally get a friend who plays electric guitar to solo all over the top of you (this shouldn't be hard, as that's what most electric guitarists like doing most of all). The sentiments of the lyrics song are fine, even admirable (in a nauseating Californian-hippy kind of way), it's just that as a Will Oldham release it doesn't stand up to the albums it comes between.
The Rainywood side is awful. A dull hicksville twang of a tune, delivered with such ponderous slowness that if it wasn't already pressed at 45rpm I'd have been tempted to speed it up to get it over with more quickly. The less said about the cheese-fest of these lyrics the better.
